What is Ultrasonic inspection

Ultrasonic testing (UT) comprises a range of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques that send ultrasonic waves through an object or material. These high frequency sound waves are transmitted into materials to characterise the material or for flaw detecting.

Another common application for this test method is ultrasonic thickness measurement, which is used to obtain the thickness of an object such as when assessing pipework or tank/vessel shell corrosion.


Why is ultrasonic inspection used

Ultrasonic Inspection is a very useful and versatile NDT method. Some of the advantages of ultrasonic inspection that are often cited include:

The depth of penetration for flaw detection or measurement is superior to other NDT methods.

Only single-sided access is needed when the pulse-echo technique is used.
